Cornwall's Coastal Delights (based in Lostwithiel)

Cornwall's Coastal Delights (based in Lostwithiel)

6 DAYS FROM £547

With a coastline stretching over 400 miles, the beauty of Cornwall’s seas and coastal landscape consistently attracted visitors with its granite cliffs, small rocky coves, dunes, sandy beaches and tranquil estuaries. Flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Coast has a wilder nature, with rugged sheer cliffs, and steep valleys whilst the South has sheltered beaches and tree lined estuaries.

Ideally located between the two coasts, our base is the picturesque Georgian town of Lostwithiel which is situated in a beautiful wooded valley at the tidal reach of the River Fowey. Lostwithiel is known for its numerous antique and craft shops specialising in paintings, lace and patchwork.

Our base here is the very comfortable BEST WESTERN FOWEY VALLEY HOTEL which is located in the heart of the town. Features of the hotel include a restaurant, bar, lounge and coffee shop where drinks and snacks are available throughout the day. All of the well furnished en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer, iron/ironing board and hospitality tray. Please note although the hotel does not have a lift, bedrooms are situated on either the ground or first floor or in the adjacent courtyard block.

Please note – restricted coach drop off points and the hilly nature of Cornwall make this holiday unsuitable for the less mobile. Some walking will be required to fully enjoy all the excursions on offer.

Departing Newark early morning, we principally utilise the motorway system to take us southwards into Devon. Then skirting Dartmoor, we proceed into Cornwall and our base at Lostwithiel.

Monday 31st August – Thursday 3rd September
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day visit to the North Coast. We travel via Bodmin to the charming resort of Padstow which is surrounded by glorious sandy beaches, at the head of the Camel River. Watch the ebb and flow of harbour life, browse the lovely shops or sample a Cornish cream tea at one of the many cafés on offer. We then continue north along the coast to the pretty village of Boscastle. Now owned and managed by the National Trust, the village (which suffered catastrophic flooding in 2004) is home to the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic!
• Full day tour travelling south via St Austell Bay to the attractive resort of Mevagissey, with its working harbour. In typical picture postcard style, pubs, cafés, galleries and shops cluster around the harbour walls and line the pretty streets. We return via the picturesque port of Charlestown, a popular location for film and tv producers – indeed many scenes in the popular series Poldark were filmed here.
• Full day tour including a visit to the Eden Project; often called the Eighth Wonder of the World this dramatic global garden is housed in tropical biomes and nestles in a crater the size of 30 football pitches. On our return journey we call for a Cornish cream tea at the superb Carlyon Bay Hotel with its spectacular cliff top setting overlooking St Austell Bay.
• Full day tour calling at the pretty village of Polperro with its narrow twisting streets lined with fishermens’ cottages. A ‘horse bus’ or electric milk float is available to transport the less mobile to and from the harbour. We then continue on to the seaside resort of Looe with its golden sandy beach and tidal river, which border the harbour shops and cafés. Perhaps take a boat trip around Looe Island where seals are often seen.

Friday 4th September
Departing Lostwithiel after breakfast we retrace our steps home to Newark for approximately teatime.
