Northern Lakes & Solway Firth (based in Wetheral)

Northern Lakes & Solway Firth (based in Wetheral)

Based at the CROWN HOTEL

5 DAYS FROM £422

Although officially part of the Irish Sea, The Solway Firth forms a natural boundary between Scotland and England. Designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty its Northern Coast has a quiet unassuming beauty with rolling hills, velvety lochs, ruined castles and hidden beaches. The Northern Lakes offer stunning scenery with high mountainous peaks and flowing valley floors, carved millions of years ago by glaciers heading South.

New for 2019, our base for the tour will be the superb AA 4 * rated CROWN HOTEL which is located in the picturesque village of Wetheral near Carlisle. Features of the Crown include a conservatory restaurant which overlooks beautiful landscaped gardens, and its own traditional village pub which serves drinks and snacks throughout the day. Guests also receive complimentary use of the hotel’s leisure facilities which include a pool, jacuzzi and steam room. All of the well furnished en suite bedrooms have tv, telephone, hairdryer and hospitality tray. Please note the hotel does not have a lift but limited ground floor rooms are available on request.

Monday 15th July
Departing Newark mid morning, we principally utilise the motorway system to travel northwards through Yorkshire so into Cumbria and our base at Wetheral.

Tuesday 16th – Thursday 18th July
Scheduled excursions during our stay will include the following:
• Full day scenic tour of the Northern Solway Coast. Crossing the border at Gretna we make a break at the Wildfowl and Wetland Centre at Caerlaverock before continuing via the ruins of Sweetheart Abbey along the coastal road to the historic harbour town of Kircudbright for the afternoon. Known as the ‘artists’ town due to its’ pastel coloured houses, Kirkcudbright has attractive Georgian buildings, wide streets and many independent shops and cafes.
• Full day tour calling at the attractive Cumbrian market town of Cockermouth – birthplace of poet William Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. Our visit will include a visit to their childhood home – the National Trust owned Wordsworth House and Garden where you can see real food on the dining table, a fire burning in the working kitchen and ink and quill pens ready for use in the clerk’s office, The garden is packed with 18th-century vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers, just as it would have been when William played and learned his love of nature here.
• Full day scenic tour calling at Dalemain Gardens (home of the World Marmalade Festival) before continuing along the shoreside of Lake Ullswater to the lovely market town of Keswick (which nestles between Skiddaw and Derwentwater) for the afternoon.
